Just Around Our Table
Galletas de Oma Fortuna
My husband's grandmother's famous butter cookies.
Ingredients
- 1 pound unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup sugar
- 3 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 5 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
Method
- 01
Make the Dough
- 02
In the bowl of a stand mixer, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light, smooth, and creamy.
- 03
Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
- 04
Mix in the vanilla extract.
- 05
In a separate bowl, combine the flour, salt, and baking powder.
- 06
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture until a soft dough forms.
- 07
Shape the Cookies
- 08
Fill a cookie press with the dough and press your favorite designs onto an ungreased baking sheet. Flowers, stars, and holiday shapes are all beautiful choices.
- 09
Or roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface and cut with your favorite cookie cutters.
- 10
Bake
- 11
Bake in a preheated 350°F (175°C) oven for 12-18 minutes, depending on the size of your cookies, until the cookies are set and the edges are just beginning to turn golden.
- 12
Do not overbake them. These cookies should stay light in color so they remain tender and buttery.
- 13
Allow them to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack.
- 14
Make It Your Own
- 15
Dip half the cookie in melted chocolate.
- 16
Sprinkle with colored sugar before baking.
- 17
Add lemon or orange zest to the dough.
- 18
Decorate with royal icing for holidays.
Rebeca’s notes
My husband's grandmother's famous butter cookies. These rich, buttery cookies melt in your mouth and are a treasured family recipe passed down through generations. Oma Fortuna was known for making these beautiful butter cookies for family gatherings and holidays. The recipe is simple, but that is exactly what makes it so special. Rich butter, a hint of vanilla, and generations of love are all you need. Today we still make them using a cookie press, just like Oma did, creating flowers, stars, and other beautiful shapes that always bring back family memories. Busy Mom Tips: make the dough a day ahead and refrigerate until ready to bake; the dough freezes beautifully for up to 3 months; let the butter come to room temperature before starting; these cookies stay fresh for several days in an airtight container. Tradition: Legacy Recipe. Cuisine: Family Heritage. Perfect for holidays, cookie trays, afternoon coffee, and gift giving.
